Come Follow Me (February Lesson): Why Do My Choices Matter?

I had this photo printed at Costco, and on the back I put President Monson's 3 R's of Choice.

I went with an Alice and Wonderland Theme.  I was reading through Pres. Monson's talk titled the 3 R's of Choice and he referenced the movie Alice and Wonderland when she meets the Cheshire cat on the pathway and asks which way to go.  I found the clip on you tube (only 3 min long), downloaded it and showed it to the class.  After we watched the clip, I asked them if they ever felt like Alice did, not knowing which direction to take.  I then made this relation and put it on the board:
Alice=You
Cheshire Cat=Influences
Path=Consequences
Conscience/Moral Compass= Our Values

I have a print out of these at the end of this post.  It was nice to put them on the board as a Visual Reminder to the girls.  After we had talked about all of this, I then made a quiz for the girls to fill out. I wanted to teach them that when we understand our values, we can understand what choices to make.  We actually went through the quiz together. I stopped on every question, added my thoughts and asked for experiences and feedback.  It turned out incredibly wonderful! I also used some of the talk by President Monson, when appropriate.  As a hand out, I bought some Little Debbie cakes and wrote on them with Frosting: "Eat Me", just to go with the Alice and Wonderland theme.

I wrapped them in cellophane and added this vintage Alice tag.

If you want any of the printables, you can find them listed below:

    1. Cami,
      I just made frosting and used my decorators tips to write it on. However, they sell little tubes of frosting in the grocery store that you can buy for around $2-3. I toyed with that option, but decided I could just make it. I am not sure where you live(I'm in Utah), but just yesterday I found frosting tubes and sprinkles at Harmons on clearance for only $1.00. That would be a great option. They had the frosting I originally was going to use. Just note, do NOT buy the GEL frosting, it never dries, will probably run and only cause you trouble, stay away from the GEL frosting! Hope that helps!

    3. Cool! I found the frosting in a random basket at the back of the store (700 E. in Draper), by the meat and cheese. I stocked up for future use!

  4. Did you read any of the talk with the girls? How easy was the transition from the movie clip to real life examples
    Thanks

    1. I didn't read it with the girls, just because we didn't have much time. I had the talk ready and handy just in case, but I found there were times when we were talking about different issues during the quiz that I referenced it and just said it in my own words. I especially made mention to what the 3 R's were and how we all have the right to choose and we all have responsibilities to make the best choices for ourselves. I think you just have to play it by ear and see how you feel while you're teaching. As far as transitioning from the movie, it went pretty well. After the movie ended, I asked them why this story might relate to them. I asked them what Alice asked (the girls answered: Where should she go), I then asked what the Cheshire cat told her (answer: where do you want to go), I then asked for lice's response (answer: It didn't matter.) I then asked if they ever felt like Alice, not knowing which way to go. Do you want to feel like Alice, or do you want to know where you are going? I asked them what we had been learning about this month (Plan of Salvation) and asked what gift was given during the pre-exsistence (Free Agency). Then went into choices, explaining about the relation between Alice and us, and used the visual Aids on the board. After, I said in able for us to make the right choices, we must first know our values, then went into the Quiz and went from there. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck!

    2. Thank you so much for your idea. I love it. Thanks for the response above. Transition was my concern and I am going to print what you did :O)
      Its adds a fun dimension to the lesson. One question and it may be lame--I haven't seen the movie in years. I will watch tomorrow. Why the words "Eat Me". Not sure if there is a tie into the lesson or just for fun :O)

    3. Oh, just for fun. When Alice needs to shrink or grow, she finds little cookies that say "eat me", or bottles that say "drink me". I just wanted to add in a treat to eat, so I thought it played off the theme. It may be cute to use a glass bottle of soda and cover up the label with "drink me" on it instead. My little printable Alice tag would work well with that too. Just another option.

    1. I am so sorry to hear that. I am not sure what to do unless you own the movie of Alice and Wonderland or could borrow it from a neighbor or the library. I know that I found the video on you tube, then in the address bar, in front of the "you" in youtube type "kiss, so it looks like "www.kissyoutube...." It took me to a different page and that is how it let me save it to my computer. I am not sure if that helped or not, but good luck!

    1. It may be too late for this info. But Amy, who commented below shared her knowledge of how to download this video. Maybe this will help:

      To download a youtube video, go to keepvid.com and paste the url address in the bar. Select the small download tab next to the url address and then options will come up to select format of download.

      Good luck ( if it isn't too late)!
